National Storytelling Week
Competition Terms and Conditions
Entry to this competition is open to persons who will be aged between 5 and 14 years on 31st January 2021, who are full time residents of the UK except the children or close relatives of employees of the Crieff Hydro Family of Hotels or its affiliates. Entries must be submitted by an adult (parent/guardian or teacher) on behalf of the child; this adult must have parental permission. This adult may be asked, with parental permission, to provide proof of age, identity and eligibility. Entry will be in three age categories – 5-7 years, 8-11 years and 12-14 years.
Entrants must write a fictional short story of no more than 200 words in English. The theme of the story is down to the entrant to decide but we will not accept entries that include profanity, violence, discrimination or unsuitable material of any sort. Any such entries will be disqualified from the competition. Entries should be sent electronically to [email protected].
The adult sending the entry will be required to approve the story and agree to these terms and conditions before submitting it to the competition. The entry should come from an adult’s email account so that we can liaise directly with someone with parental responsibility about use of the child’s name, story and photo across press and social media. Any parents that would not like their child’s work, name or image to be used across social media and press can request this on entry. It will not prevent you from entering the competition nor from being shortlisted.
Entry opens on Saturday 30th January 2021 at 9am. Entry closes on Monday 1st March 2021 at 6pm. Submissions received outside of this time frame will not be considered.
Entrants can only enter individually. Only one entry per person is permitted and the story must be wholly created by the entrant only.
All entries must be the original work of the entrant and must not infringe the rights of any other party.
Entrants retain the copyright in their entries but their parent or guardian grants to Crieff Hydro Family of Hotels a non-exclusive royalty-free licence to publish and post the entry online including via social media platforms.
The first round will be judged by the Crieff Hydro team and 10 stories per category (30 in total will be shortlisted). Shortlisted entries will be notified by Friday 2nd April 2021. Independent judges, recruited in partnership with Strathearn Artspace, will review the 30 shortlisted entries and select one winner per category. They will provide individual feedback to all shortlisted entries.
Winners will be notified on or around 9th April 2021. No correspondence will be entered into on the final result. Winners will then be invited to meet our nominated illustrator to start to bring their story to life. Given current circumstances, this meeting will likely take place via video conference call. It is essential that a parent, guardian or adult with responsibility for the winning child is present during this video call. Where it’s safe to meet and within easy travel distance we will try to arrange for winners to meet the illustrator. This meeting will take place during the Easter school holidays.
Each shortlisted entry will have their short story printed in a specially designed bedtime story book. They will each receive a copy of this book.
Winners will see their story brought to life through illustration and included within the same bedtime story book. Each winner will have up to two illustrations for their story. They will also receive a copy of the book along with a two-night Family stay, including breakfast at one of the eight hotels in the Crieff Hydro Family.
All shortlisted entries and winners will be invited to a mini book festival at Crieff Hydro Hotel to celebrate their stories and meet the judges. All guests will receive free entry to Glen’s Adventure Park and a free Family afternoon tea at this event. This event is likely to take place in July, a date will be confirmed nearer the time. Of course, any such event will also be subject to current government guidelines and we will only run the festival if it is safe to do so. In the event that we can’t run the event, shortlisted entries and winners will receive a voucher to use towards a visit and experience one of the hotels within the Family.
Each winner will receive a voucher to redeem against a two-night stay at one of the hotels in the Crieff Hydro Family. The stay will be for a family of up to 5 (2 adults and 3 children) including breakfast. The voucher will be valid to redeem for 12 months from the date of issue.
