Wildlife and nature walks
We’ve always got a full house when it comes to wildlife scampering around the resort here. You could say it’s a bit like living in a Disney movie, except our little critters aren’t quite as keen when it comes to helping make our beds.
A little walk around our grounds means you might spot anything from wild deer gallivanting around the quarry, to our resident ducks paddling around trying to catch frogs in the pond.
Let us take you on a wee wander around our 900 acres of wildlife. We’ll start down at our Victorian Gardens, where you’ll find our ducks and rabbits living in perfect harmony by the pond. Two of our rabbits, Cocoa and Fudge, are the size of baby rhinos, so you definitely won’t miss them.
Recently there’ve been a few new additions to pond life – six to be exact. They arrived after our Head Gardener, Dave, found a rabbit in-need up The Knock. Someone had abandoned poor Thumper all alone up there so, of course, Dave adopted him and popped him in the hutch with our girls Cocoa and Fudge.
Since that fateful day, they’ve been doing just as rabbits do. So, you’ll now have the pleasure of meeting Caramel, Milky, Snickers, Toffee and Treacle. The younger generation aren’t quite as plump, so they’re a little harder to spot.
After strolling around the Victorian Gardens, you could take a walk up to Action Glen. The most scenic route is along the Cinder Path, which starts alongside the Leigh building. You’ll pass the ‘Jesus Well’ and see some stunning mountain views along the way (just watch where you plant your feet as our horses use this path too!).
Follow the cinder path as it weaves through the woodland which is home to over 100 different types of trees, heaps of wildlife and, of course, Aloft! – our aerial assault course. You could spot some goldcrests, buzzards, treecreepers, woodpeckers, cuckoos, bats and if you’re really lucky you might even spot a (sadly endangered) red squirrel.
If you’d like nothing more than to see a wee Bambi prancing around, then the quarry is the place to go. Our Action Glen instructor George, is on first name terms with most of the deer here, so he’ll be sure to point you in the right direction, or maybe even give you a personal introduction.
Just a little further up from Action Glen, at our 9 hole Culcrieff Golf Course, you’ll see some hares, heron and swallows perfecting their birdie. You’ll also see some of the best views of Ben More and Ben Vorlich in town. If you’re keen to walk a little further, take a ramble up one of our Top 10 Things We Love – The Knock aka owl territory.
With us being a dog-friendly hotel, you’re bound to spot a few pooches around the place. And our land is home to over 50 horses too – including our very own Shetland ponies.
